Kajian ini bertujuan untuk meneliti sistem matawang bersandarkan emas yang dipraktikkan pada kurun ke 19 dan 20 serta tinjauannya menerusi perspektif Al Quran. Perbincangan distrukturkan dengan pertama pemfokusan terhadap perbincangan berhubung matawang menurut perspektif Al Quran dengan menelusuri secara khusus karya Tafsir oleh Ibn Kathir. Kedua, analisis kandungan terhadap kajian literatur tentang sistem matawang bersandarkan emas yang ditulis oleh kedua-dua ilmuwan Islam dan Barat diteliti bagi memperoleh dapatan yang kemudiannya dimanfaatkan untuk meneroka pelaksanaan sistem matawang bersesuaian dengan syariat Islam dalam konteks semasa. Sementara fokus ketiga kajian ini adalah untuk memperoleh satu rumusan yang mencadangkan pelaksanaan sistem matawang bersandarkan emas sebagai salah satu pendekatan praktikal bagi menggantikan sistem matawang fiat yang ada pada masa ini. Kajian ini secara keseluruhannya menyumbang kepada disiplin ilmu ekonomi dengan menambah dapatan berhubung sistem matawang yang adil dan membawa kemakmuran selaras dengan matlamat ekonomi Islam.
This paper investigates the gold backed currency system which been practiced in 19th and 20th century and its overview from Quranic perspective.The paper is structured to first focusing on the discussion of currency based on Quranic perspective. This is done particularly by referring to the Tafsir written by Ibn Kathir. Secondly, in order to explore the implementation of the currency system in accordance to Islamic perspective, the content-analysis method is applied on the previous studies on the gold backed currency system which is written by both Muslim and western scholars. The third focus is to derive a finding which suggests that the gold backed currency system is a better alternative for the current fiat currency system. This study adds to the body of knowledge by proposing a currency system which is just and to bring the desired prosperity in line with the objectives of Islamic economics.
